The Universal Technical Institute was established in 1965. UTI grew internally and via acquisitions, adding new curricula to its programs and opening new campuses. Performance Training Associates and National Technology Transfer, Inc. (NTT) was bought by UTI in June 1998. (PTA). NTT offered technicians in industries related to the ones they served with comprehensive training sessions. In markets where NTT competes, PTA hosted lecture training seminars.

For about $50.2 million, the purchase of NTT and PTA was finalized. At a loss of $42.9 million, the NTT operation was shut down. UTI had a debt balance of $57.3 million at the time of its initial public offering.
